The Brazos Locavores have visited some pretty amazing local farms in the last few months, but you can’t get much sweeter than our next trip. It’s strawberry season here in Central Texas and the berry picking just couldn’t be better. Get out your buckets, a hat, and some sunscreen and get ready to pick your own juicy strawberries with us at Kings Orchard.
Located in Plantersville, about 40 miles southeast of Bryan-College Station, Kings Orchard is a wonderful source of fresh local berries. By the time of our field trip, however, there will be more than berries to be picked. The orchard will also have fresh flowers and some seasonal veggies for the taking. Berries are currently running $3.35 a pound and picking boxes are available at the Orchard for a small fee.
This trip will be a little different from our last field trips. We’ll be meeting at 11:00 at Brazos Natural Foods and will carpool out to Kings Orchard where we can picnic at their picnic tables under the beautiful shade of the trees. Don’t forget to pack a lunch!
For those of you who can’t meet quite that early, drive on out to Kings Orchard on your own and meet us there at 1:00 PM for a brief talk about the orchard after which we’ll be released to pick at our heart’s content.
This trip will be less structured than the others, allowing us more time to roam and “shop.” Be sure to bring the kids as this is an amazing opportunity to let them both pick and enjoy the literal fruits of their labor.

I just checked out the Kings Orchard website. April 19 is the new date for their Easter Egg Hunt and festivities, so it may be a bit more crowded than expected. Just a heads up!
