Jim Hightower to speak at TAMU

Texas A&M Local Farm Aid: Jim Hightower to speak with participation from local farmers, as well as Live Music. Tuesday/ May 5th/ 5-7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday May 5th, the Association for Social Entrepreneurship is hosting the first collegiate organized Texas A&M Local Farm Aid in order to stress the importance and benefits of supporting local farms. The event will be held in Rudder 601. Texas Agriculture Commissioner from 1982 to 1991, syndicated columnist, and New York Times bestselling author of “Swim Against The Current: Even A Dead Fish Can Go With The Flow”, Jim Hightower will be speaking on the importance of local, organic agriculture in a global economy. Jim Hightower is a native Texan, and understands our roots here at Texas A&M as farmers and land owners. His books will be available for a book signing.

Locally owned grocery stores Village Foods and Brazos Natural Foods; local businesses What’s The Buzz Coffee Co and Messina Hof; as well as local farmers representing the Brazos Valley Farmers’ Market will be in attendance displaying their products. Shirts for future events will be displayed courteous of SOS Organic Cotton Farms “from seed to sowing.” We will be circulating a pledge/petition emphasizing the importance of buying and producing local, bringing local producers onto campus, and creating a sustainable agriculture program at Texas A&M. Live music will be provided by Strawberry Jam and other local artists. Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to attend to kick back and enjoy the nation’s most famous populist, Jim Hightower, as well as live music, local food, and good old fashioned community building.

The event is being hosted by the Collegiate Association for Social Entrepreneurship, Aggie Community Garden, Brazos Progressives, Brazos Locavores, Friends of the Brazos Valley Farmers’ Market, and KEOS Community Radio 89.1.
